What Meta's pairing actually gives you
Worth being precise here, because it is the thing people discover only after buying. The glasses pair over Bluetooth to a phone. Through that link you get sound in your ears, a microphone, the camera, and the assistant and apps Meta ships. The Neural Band reads finger gestures for those same apps.
What is missing from that list is any notion of an external computer. Setting it up
The setup is the same pairing MightyMouse uses for a phone, done from the glasses instead. It takes about a minute and happens once.
- Install MightyMouse on the Mac and open Settings. It is a direct download - Apple Silicon and Intel, signed and notarized.
- Open the phone remote panel. The Mac shows a QR code carrying a short pairing code.
- Scan it from the glasses and open the page it points at, on the same network as the Mac.
- Confirm the pairing code. The glasses swap it for a stored credential of their own.
- Done - and it stays done. Next time the glasses reconnect on that stored credential. There is no QR code to scan again.
The pairing step exists rather than a plain link because the link alone would be a URL anyone on the network could reuse. Trading the code for a credential the glasses keep is what makes the second connection both automatic and not open to a stranger.
What it is good for, honestly
The case that justifies it is the one where a screen is inconvenient and the work is still running. A long agent job you want to keep an eye on while you make coffee. A terminal you need to glance at without going back to the desk. Reading something on the Mac while your hands are busy with something that is not a keyboard.
The case it is not for is replacing your monitor for a day of work. A display in glasses is smaller and lower resolution than the one on your desk, and gesture control is slower than a real trackpad. This is for the times you are away from the desk, not the times you are at it.
